Many of you aren't aware that before I started Blue Coast Records, I had a thriving commercial recording studio business. We opened the doors to OTR Studio back in 1982 and for 20 years had the opportunity to record then-emerging artists who would later become key figures in today's music. Yes, I used to record large ensembles with the musicians isolated in their rooms. Yes, I recorded to tape. Yes, some of the music I forgot and some of it is fantastic.
For the Qobuz interview with David Solomon I found a number of the recordings and put together a playlist for your enjoyment. One of my favorite albums was a large jazz world beat ensemble called Peter Apfelbaum and the Hieroglyphics for Island Records. I'll be telling a few stories about these recordings coming up. Not all the albums I wanted to add are on this list. Funny, when you're recording the album you rarely know the album's title and/or get to see the album cover. Finding the albums means getting out the box of about 500 CDs and try to remember what I was doing those first 20 years of business before Blue Coast Records.
My dream would be to find these projects and release them in DSD, that is, if the masters didn't burn in the Universal fire. :(
