#115 - Paul McCandless, are you reading this today? A note from a fan!
We get a lot of email from fans and this one was particularly heart warming. Paul McCandless is one of my oldest friends in the world. Thirty-five years ago he took a chance to have me produce (and record) his first album on Windham Hill called "Heresay". The album has so many wonderful stories around it, I won't try to tell all the tales today, but know that they'll be coming.
So, Paul, if you're reading this... this one is for you, too. Remember when Lyle Mays listed it on his "5 favorite desert island recordings" (was it on Still Life? the Pat Metheny album?). Or do you remember Steve Rodby showed up to a session in a suit and tie? And the night Trilok Gurtu cooked something at your Bolinas house that had so many hot peppers only he could eat it? And Art Lande having a meltdown (unimaginable)? Or what about punching in a solo for you when I construction workers were banging nails loudly?
Good times for sure. :)
Miss you, Paul! and Happy Birthday on March 24 if I forget!
Your friend for ever,
Cookie
ps... for those of your who don't know Paul McCandless... He was the oboist in the band "Oregon" that was an acoustic improvisation group that changed a lot of lives. Paul was probably the first "real" oboist to enter the jazz community. As a former oboist myself, I was a gushing fan before I met him. Well, I'm still a gushing fan now. He's on hundreds of recordings that you some of you might want to check out.
Note from a fan.....
Dear Blue Coast Press and specifically Ms. Marenco, if this can get to her.
Paul McCandless' CD "Heresay" is one of my favorite recordings. The
quality of the recording is fantastic.
Somehow I ruined the CD. I don't know how, but it had to be me who
scratched it. Windham Hill is no more!!! Well perhaps it is, sort of,
but the album is no longer being distributed. I found a used copy
through Amazon. It sounds fantastic!
I use my dad's JBL's with D131 woofers and 075 tweeters. They go back
to 1954 or 55. Good recordings can sound wonderful. Poor recordings
are dreadful. Reading your article, "In search of... The Perfect
Speaker," seemed so honest. Mr. McCandless and you did a great job with
"Heresay." If it sounds great on Dad's JBL's, it will sound great
through almost anything.
Thank you,
Paul H.
