It's great to be back in the studio working with some of my favorite people who happen to also be amazing musicians. Last week we had Dayan Kai recording for two days... one of the original Blue Coast Artists who performed on the first Blue Coast Collection.
Between performances of his new music, we talked about those of us that have survived the last 20 years... and those that didn't. Some great artists just didn't want to go on. Others continue to pave the road from venue to venue. We talked about the music's history and value, how we all met and the need to preserve what is left. We discussed a museum that one day could house the music, instruments and devices we still have. Before the next operating system squishes another brilliant album or hard drive
Sometimes I forget Dayan is blind as he leads ME up the stairs to the recording room to setup mics. He's been here so often, a it's memorized route. I take it for granted. Shame on me!
I spoke to Meghan Andrews who's planning to come out to record in late May or June and exchanged emails with Valerie Joyce as we worked on a mix of older tracks that were never released.
Now, I'm listening back to Jane Selkey's first album with me.. I Gorgona. I think we recorded this 25 years ago? How did the time go by so fast? Why does this album sound so good? Was it the tape? Was it that I forgot how we used to record with care and community in the studio? Hopefully we'll have this in DSD256 to you soon!
Great memories. I hope we can put all of these artists together for a 20th anniversary Blue Coast Bash weekend. Hope you all come!
